Iraq is moving forward with plans to import crude oil from Oman through a new pipeline across the Gulf, according to the State Organization for Marketing of Oil (SOMO).

SOMO Director General Ali Nizar announced Thursday that Iraq and Oman have reached an initial agreement for Omani crude exports to Iraq. The first stage of the project includes construction of a pipeline with a 10-million-barrel capacity at the port of Duqm in Oman, with the possibility of expanding volumes in the future.

Talks are underway to finalize the pipeline’s route. If the line is extended by land, agreements with countries along the transit path will be required.

On November 3, the Iraqi government signed two agreements and 24 memoranda of understanding with the Sultanate of Oman, further strengthening bilateral cooperation in energy and other sectors.
