The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has strongly denied the authenticity of a list of ambassadorial candidates recently circulated on social media, calling it false and politically motivated.

In a statement issued Monday, the ministry said the list was released amid ongoing political competition and electoral maneuvering, aiming to defame professional and national diplomatic figures. It clarified that the names mentioned in the leaked list do not reflect actual candidates, and that 50% of the names are current diplomats, while 90% are listed as opposed to only five real nominees from within the ministry. The ministry emphasized that any official list must follow constitutional and legal procedures.

The ministry also noted that 27 ambassadors are currently in service, 11 of whom are set to retire this year, with five more expected to retire in 2026, leaving a critical gap in diplomatic representation. According to internal data, the authentic list of ambassadorial candidates includes 23% relatives of martyrs and political prisoners, 64% civil servants, 19% from political or civic institutions, and 17% academics.
