Mazhar Mohammed Salih, financial adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, said Thursday that Turkey’s decision not to renew the 1975 oil pipeline agreement with Iraq will not negatively impact the country.

He emphasized that oil exports through the pipeline have already been halted for over two years, so the cancellation does not bring new disruptions. Salih noted that Baghdad and Ankara are currently focused on broader cooperation, particularly within the Development Road project, which could include restructuring the pipeline agreement to better serve both nations.

"If a new agreement is reached under better conditions, it will certainly be in Iraq's interest," he stated.

The 1975 agreement officially expires in July 2026. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has chosen not to extend it, invoking Article 3 of a presidential decree.
