Iraq is expected to achieve self-sufficiency in wheat and barley production this year, according to a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Mahdi Zamd Qaisi, Advisor to the Agriculture Ministry, said Thursday that more than five million acres have been planted with wheat and barley across the country. The first phase of the harvest has already begun, with over 200,000 tonnes of wheat marketed so far.

Qaisi added that early indicators point to a successful and abundant harvest, which will help Iraq reduce its reliance on imported grains and support food security across the country.

"This year’s results are very promising and suggest we are on track to meet our domestic demand for both wheat and barley,” he said.

The announcement comes amid regional efforts to strengthen agricultural output and improve national food security amid global supply challenges.
