Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said on Tuesday that US sanctions on Iran have forced Baghdad to seek alternative sources for gas imports, which currently supply around 33 percent of Iraq’s electricity needs.

Speaking after meetings in Washington, Hussein said that negotiations are underway with several countries, including Turkey, Jordan, and Gulf states, to secure Iraq’s electricity requirements. He emphasized that the discussions in Washington also covered the situation in Syria, noting that the US administration has set eight conditions for the new authorities in Damascus, one of which addresses the sensitive issue of foreign fighters.

Hussein reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with the United States, despite ongoing challenges within the country. He stressed that Iraq is striving to avoid becoming embroiled in regional conflicts and is instead working to be part of broader regional solutions.

"We have succeeded in keeping Iraq away from the fire of regional wars and we are committed to continuing this balanced policy,” Hussein stated.
