BAGHDAD – April 26, 2025 – Iraq was the fifth largest importer of Turkish goods in 2024, receiving $12 billion worth of exports from Turkey out of a total of $237 billion, according to Manar Obaidi, head of the Iraqi Future Institute for Economic Research and Consultancy.

Obaidi noted that Iraq continues to strengthen its position as one of Turkey’s top trading partners. The main imports from Turkey include furniture, dairy products, wheat products, vegetables, wood, cosmetics, milling and food products, cocoa products, manufactured goods, cigarettes, and tobacco.

Iraq also holds the position as the world’s largest importer of meat, accounting for 65 percent of Turkey’s total meat exports. In the mechanical equipment sector, Iraq ranked ninth, with 2.78 percent of Turkey’s exports, and third in electrical appliances with 406% a possible reporting error or statistical clarification needed.

Obaidi urged Iraq to diversify its import sources and reduce reliance on Turkish goods by exploring alternatives from countries like Saudi Arabia and Jordan, aiming to limit Turkey’s economic influence on the Iraqi market.
