Basra, Iraq – April 24, 2025:
Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadhil, announced that more than 126,000 solar panels have arrived for the Basra Solar Power Project, located in the Artawi area. The project, developed by French energy giant Total, has a planned capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
The minister emphasized that the Basra solar initiative is one of the largest renewable energy projects currently underway in Iraq. It is designed to help meet the country’s growing electricity demands, particularly during peak summer months.
Fadhil also noted that just yesterday, around 160 containers of solar panels were delivered from top international suppliers, in addition to 18 containers carrying high-voltage cables and essential components needed for the national power grid.
The Basra solar project marks a significant move toward diversifying Iraq’s energy sources and modernizing its power infrastructure. It will provide clean electricity to the grid in Basra province and represents a new chapter in Iraq’s renewable energy ambitions.
