VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed on Monday, April 21, 2025. He passed away at his residence in Casa Santa Marta following complications from double pneumonia.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis was elected as the 266th pope on March 13, 2013. He was the first Latin American and first Jesuit pope in history. Known for his humble lifestyle and progressive views, he championed social justice, climate awareness, and interfaith dialogue throughout his 12-year papacy.
His health had deteriorated in recent months after being hospitalized for bronchitis earlier this year. Despite returning to the Vatican, his condition worsened in April.
The Vatican said preparations are underway for the papal conclave to elect his successor. Pope Francis leaves behind a legacy of reform, humility, and compassion
