SULAIMANI — Following a deadly attack overnight, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs on Wednesday (May 12) reiterated its warning that Islamic State (ISIS) militants were using the security vacuum in the disputed areas to stage attacks.

“To prevent such incidents from happening again, a comprehensive agreement must be reached between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Security Forces,” the ministry said.

On Tuesday night, ISIS militants attacked Peshmerga unit near Naijul town in Kifri district, killing one Peshmerga and wounding another.

Later on Wednesday, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani strongly condemned the attack and offered his condolences to the family of the Peshmerga who was killed.

“We stress the need to speed coordination between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army in those areas,” he said.
