SULAIMANI — Sulaimani Forest and Environment Police Directorate said on Wednesday (May 12) that a fire burned approximately 2,000 acres of land in Sulaimani governorate’s Mawat district.

The directorate said that controlling the fire was difficult due to the presence of landmines in the area.

It added that the fire damaged about 20 acres of vineyards and farmland.

Wildfires are a common occurrence in the Kurdistan Region during the extremely hot and dry summer. Officials are warning that this year could be worse due to an expected drought.
