SULAIMANI — Manager of Sulaimani’s Takia sub-district Mamad Rashid said on Monday (May 10) that the statue of Abdulrahman, a Baban King, located at the Darbandi Bazian gate was set on fire by unknown people overnight, destroying it completely.

Police and Asayish are investigating.

The Baban family says the act was “directed by a side” and that they will protest the act.

“We consider these actions as directed against the Baban family and the history of our kingdom, Kurdistan, and Sulaimani,” they said, urging the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to arrest the perpetrators.

Centered on Sulaimani, Baban was a Kurdish principality within the Ottoman Empire that existed from the 17th to the 19th century.

Abdulrahman ruled the kingdom for twenty-four years, dying in 1813.
