SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Masoud Barzani commemorated on Friday (April 16) the 34th anniversary of the chemical attack on Balisan and Sheikh Wasan by saying that every part of Kurdistan had witnessed atrocities.

“We send thousands of greetings to the pure souls of the martyrs of this crime and all the martyrs of Kurds and Kurdistan,” he said.

More than 200 people were killed in the attack on the two villages, located to the east of Erbil, on April 16, 1987 when Iraqi warplanes dropped chemical weapons from the air.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani also issued statements commemorating the anniversary.

The KRG “reaffirms its commitment to serving the martyrs' families,” Prime Minister Barzani said.
