SULAIMANI — On the first anniversary of the announcement that the coronavirus had been identified in Sulaimani city, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Health announced on Monday (March 1) it had officially recorded 197 new cases of coronavirus over the past 24 hours.

There were 85 new cases in Erbil governorate, 56 in Duhok, 47 in Sulaimani, five in the Garmian administration, and four in the Raparin administration.

Last year, four people who had recently arrived in Sulaimani from Iran tested positve on March 1. Over the next several months, cases accumulated slowly, but progressively.

By the autumn, the outbreak reached its peak. On October 27, the Region recorded its highest single-day total with 1,597 infections.

The ministry also said two patients died from the disease, while 111 others recovered.

Last week, KRG Minister of Health Saman Barzinji said in a statement that most of the new cases are the UK coronavirus variant.

According to the health ministry, there have been 109,151 officially-recorded cases of coronavirus infection in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 103,625 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and 3,521 have died from it.

The numbers are almost certainly an undercount.
