SULAIMANI — Sulaimani Traffic Director Faraidun Omar said on Thursday (October 29) that traffic police will start fining drivers 50,000 Iraqi dinars on Friday for not wearing protective masks while other passengers are in the vehicle.

On Monday, authorities in Erbil governorate began enforcing fines of up to 20,000 Iraqi dinars (IQD) against people who fail to wear protective face masks in public in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the Kurdistan Region.

Fifty-percent of funds generated by the fines in Erbil will be redistributed to various security agencies tasked with enforcing the new regulation. The remaining fifty-percent will be allocated for purchasing personal protective equipment.

Sulaimani officials did not specify how funds generated by the new decree would be spent.

According to the health ministry, there have been 74,334 officially-recorded cases of the coronavirus in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 42,076 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and 2,406 have died from it.
