SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Education said on Wednesday (September 23) that 540 million Iraq dinars ($453,000) will be allocated to provide protective equipment at educational institutions in the Kurdistan Region during the new academic year.

Also on Wednesday, the University of Sulaimani announced that classes for the new academic year will begin on October 4, but will take place virtually for at least the first six weeks of the semester.

After that, the need for and appropriateness of in-person classes will be assessed.

KRG Education Minister Alan Hama Said announced earlier this month that first- and second-graders will have in-person classes starting on October 10. Twelfth-graders will start in-person classes on September 27.

All other primary and secondary students will start the year virtually.

According to the health ministry, there have been 43,323 cases of coronavirus in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 27,698 patients has recovered from COVID-19 and 1,572 have died from it.
