New academic year to start online for most students: KRG Council of Ministers

SULAIMANI — In response to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Council of Ministers announced on Wednesday (September 2) that the 2020-2021 academic year will start online for most students, instead of in the classroom.

However, twelfth-grade students will receive in-class instruction.

Following a meeting chaired by KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the cabinet said in a statement that representatives of the ministries of education and higher education gave detailed briefings about plans to protect students and staff from infection. The health ministry also gave an update on the current state of the outbreak.

“The relevant ministries are directed to make necessary preparations and guidelines within the framework of their authority to announce the first semester calendar and to determine the first day of the new academic year,” the readout of the meeting said.

The Council of Ministers also reaffirmed the importance of citizens’ adherence the public health guidelines related to the coronavirus outbreak and instructed the Ministry of Health to continue its campaign to raise awareness.
