SULAIMANI — Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked the house of Saladin Deputy Governor Ismail Haloub in the Ishaqi area southwest of Tikrit at dawn on Sunday (August 9), triggering clashes between the attackers and the official's guards.

“The attack lasted for about 20 minutes, the Daesh [ISIS] elements withdrew after the arrival of backup forces to the area,” an officer with Saladin Operations Command Saad Muhammad told Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency.

On August 5, two Iraqi soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in an ISIS attack on the Iraqi Army in the governorate.

Earlier on Sunday, Saladin Joint Operations Commander Abdlmuhsin Hatim said that its forces killed three ISIS militants and destroyed six tunnels and four hideouts belonging to the militant group in Tharthar Valley.

There has been an uptick in ISIS attacks targeting civilians and military personnel since the onset of the year, especially in the disputed areas claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad, including Nineveh, Saladin, Kirkuk, and Diyala governorates.
