SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said on Monday (July 13) that Tuesday will be an official holiday for employees of government ministries and institutions, except for the KRG Ministry of Education because the already delayed national exams for twelfth grade students are being held Tuesday morning.

The holiday celebrates the anniversary of when Iraq’s Hashemite monarchy was overthrown by Abd al-Karim Qasim and the Free Officers on July 14, 1958, establishing the First Iraqi Republic.

In 1961, the Kurds in the north under Mustafa Barzani rose up against the Republican forces, launching the First Iraqi-Kurdish War.

Qasim’s government survived until 1963, when he was overthrown and executed by the Ba’ath Party.

However, the July 14 Revolution is widely seen as a watershed in the development of democratic governance in Iraq and the Region, having removed the hereditary monarchy.
