SULAIMANI — Peshmerga veterans protested in Sulaimani on Thursday (July 9) because disbursement of their salaries has been delayed.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is facing a massive budget shortfall and has repeatedly delayed payment of salaries this spring.

In June, it announced that it was cutting salaries for most public sector workers by at least 21 percent, including people in special categories such as Peshmerga veterans and former political prisoners.

“As Peshmerga veterans of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan [PUK], we came to tell the authorities that we will not accept injustice anymore. We participated in abolishing the Ba’ath regime and ended it, but now the Kurdish authorities are tormenting the people,” one of the veterans said.

“We will only give the authority one month. After that, the Peshmerga here and the other Peshmergas will start another revolution,” he threatened.

Another protester said that the situation is unacceptable, adding that the people supported them.

On July 4, KRG Spokesperson Jotiar Adil promised that all public sector workers would be paid by July 15.
