SULAIMANI — The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) caucus in the Kurdistan Parliament said on Wednesday (July 1) that public sector workers whose salaries were cut by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and are members of the KDP will be compensated by the party.

Khoshnaw told a KDP-affiliated media outlet that no one has prevented the implementation of salary and pension reform that was passed by Parliament this winter and that it must go ahead, adding that the KDP considers itself to be the main sponsor of the law and is proud of it.

“Thousands of people are getting their salaries cut, but if a person deserves to be paid 3 million dinars then the party will pay him that amount,” Khoshnaw said.

He did not say from what sources his party planned to tap to provide the compensation.

In response to a major budget shortfall, the KRG held off on distributing salaries for much of this spring and then announced on June 21 that is was cutting the salaries of public sector workers who earn more than 300,000 Iraqi dinars by 21 percent for this pay period.
