SULAIMANI — Forty-nine workers at Tasluja Cement Factory protested on Thursday (July 2) against a decision by the factory’s management to lay them off, blocking the road leading to the factory with their trucks.

The workers are all from Chaqizh village where the factory is located. According to the workers, they were told that their contracts had been canceled and that they no longer have the right to work there.

One of the workers said that he had been working at the factory for more than six years and that the workers have not yet received social insurance payments.

Economic conditions in the Kurdistan Region are deteriorating because of the coronavirus pandemic, slumping oil prices, and the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) difficulty paying public sector salaries.
