SULAIMANI — The Duhok Volunteer Lawyers Network said on Sunday (May 31) that a Duhok court has ordered the release of local protest organizer Badal Barwari after fifteen days in custody.

The network’s director, Khatab Omer, said that Barwari was released on 2 million Iraqi dinar ($1,600) bail.

Omer said that the organizer was charged with Article 2 of the Communications Device Misuse Law, which is a federal statute. He added that the person who filed the complaint against Barwari has not yet appeared in court.

Earlier this month, Barwari helped to organize a protest by teachers and other public sector workers in Duhok who were angry at delays in the disbursement of their salaries. He and another organizer were arrested in the early hours of May 13, the day of the demonstration.

Despite those arrests, hundreds of people still gathered in the city’s Azadi Park. The security forces responded by arresting approximately 100 protesters and at least eight journalists who were covering the rally. All of them were released within several days.
