SULAIMANI — Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with federal Minister of Defense Najah al-Shammari in Erbil on Saturday (January 25) and discussed the need for cooperation between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi Security Forces in the fight against Islamic State (ISIS).

The talks particularly focused on the disputed areas, a belt of territory stretching from Nineveh through Kirkuk into Diyala that is claimed by both Baghdad and Erbil. This dispute has created a security vacuum that allows ISIS greater freedom of movement.

“ISIS terrorists have become a serious threat to the residents of these areas and there must be increased coordination and cooperation between the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga forces to deter ISIS threats in those areas jointly,” Barzani’s office said in the statement.

During the meeting, Shammari expressed readiness to work with Erbil to put pressure on the militants. He also praised the Peshmerga for its role in defeating ISIS.
