SULAIMANI — Truck drivers in Koya blocked the main roads to Erbil and Sulaimani on Wednesday (January 22) after the municipality decided that trucks would no longer be able to drive through the city during the day.

According to new rules, trucks will not be allowed to enter the town between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. in an effort to reduce traffic and prevents accidents.

NRT Digital Media reporter in Koya Khalid Muhammad said that more than a hundred trucks blocked the roads while protesters waited for local government officials to come and listen to their demands.

One truck driver told NRT Digital Media that “the decision of the municipality of Koya is not fair decision and they have not taken the drivers situation into consideration, since they now have to wait outside the city for several hours.”

While NRT's reporter was conducting the interview, the Koya Asayish arrived and prevented him from completing it. They also prevented the reporting team from covering the rest of the protest.
