SULAIMANI — The Council of Representatives’ Constitutional Amendments Committee confirmed on Sunday (January 19) that its members have reached an agreement to reduce the size of the national legislature.

Currently there are 329 members of the Council of Representatives, but the statement did not reveal the new number.

Since major major unrest began on October 1, protesters have been demanding large-scale changes to Iraqi government and governance, including reforms to the way that elections are held.

In December, lawmakers passed an electoral reform law, mostly focused on the composition of the Independent High Electoral Commission.

During its discussions, the committee also agreed to change the name of the Federal Supreme Court to the Federal Supreme Constitutional Court.
