Diplomatic missions in Erbil, Baghdad condemn Erbil attack

SULAIMANI — Diplomatic missions in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region issued statements of solidarity on Wednesday (July 17), after a Turkish diplomat was shot dead in a brazen attack at a restaurant in Erbil.

Special Representative for Iraq of the United Nations Secretary-General Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert released a statement saying that “this heinous attack cannot be justified under any circumstance and must be soundly condemned.”

“I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish the injured a speedy recovery. I urge maximum restraint and intensified efforts by the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice,” the statement added.

The US Embassy in Baghdad tweeted a condemnation of what it called a“heinous attack.”

“We extend our condolences to the Turkish Mission and express our solidarity in the defense and safety of foreign diplomats and diplomatic missions in Iraq,” it added.

Later, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement also condemning the attack.

New UK Consul General in Erbil James Thorton tweeted that he “was shocked to hear about the killings of Turkish diplomatic colleagues here in Erbil” and sent “deepest condolences to their families and to the Turkish Government.”

The Italian Embassy tweeted its condolences and said what happened in Erbil was “a terrible crime and the culprit must be be immediately apprehended and judged. @ItalyinIraq fully supports the investigation opened by the Authorities.”
