Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani announced on Tuesday that the federal government is preparing major economic reforms aimed at reducing Iraq’s dependence on oil and moving toward a diversified national economy.
Sudani stated that Iraq plans to stop gas exports by 2028, redirecting production toward domestic needs to strengthen long-term energy security. As part of the government’s economic roadmap, Iraq expects to attract around $100 billion in Gulf investments focused on development, infrastructure, and strategic projects.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing poverty, limiting excessive public-sector employment, and combating corruption, adding that these efforts will continue in the current and future cabinets.
Sudani also highlighted Iraq’s strong diplomatic ties, noting that the federal government maintains positive relations with the Kurdistan Region, the European Union, the United States, and other partners, with ongoing dialogues to support stability and economic growth.
