The trial of Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir, leader of the New Generation Movement, has been postponed until next month after he was once again brought before the Sulaimanyah Court on an unsubstantiated complaint.

According to NRT, the case is based on a complaint filed by a member of the PUK security forces who identified himself as a journalist. The complainant accused Abdulwahid of defamation after the latter allegedly said he was part of the security forces, while the complainant claimed to be a journalist.

Abdulwahid’s lawyers stated that the complaint lacks legal evidence and that the complainant is publicly known to be part of the security forces. NRT Digital Media had earlier published a photo showing the complainant in PUK security attire, confirming his affiliation.

This development follows the August 12, 2025, nighttime raid on Abdulwahid’s home by security forces, who arrested him without prior notice over several unproven complaints. The Sulaimanya Court later sentenced him to five months in prison.

His arrest sparked widespread reactions, with local and international media reporting that it came shortly after Abdulwahid warned the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to address the salary issue and implement its agreements with Baghdad. Following his detention, New Generation Movement MPs said the safety of their leader rests with the PUK.
