SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry
of Peshmerga Affairs said on Saturday (August 21) that a team from its military engineering
department defused a bomb in Erbil governorate’s Zini Warte.
The ministry said in a statement that a 25-liter container
filled with TNT was found and defused in the area where Peshmerga 7th Infantry Brigade
is stationed.
It blamed the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) for placing the
bomb, saying that "according to preliminary investigation, all assumptions are
that the PKK forces planted the bomb”.
On August 18, the ministry said that a roadside mine placed
by the PKK hit a vehicle belonging to the ministry and slightly injured a
Peshmerga member in Duhok’s Amedi district.
The PKK has fought a decades-long insurgency against the
Turkish government for Kurdish rights and autonomy and maintains a network of
bases in the Kurdistan Region.
The KRG has close economic, political, and security
relations with Turkey.
The Peshmerga and the PKK have clashed on several occasions
since November.
In June, six Peshmerga were killed in two alleged clashes
with the PKK, though the latter has denied responsibility.
