A New Generation Movement MP in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) parliament stated on Saturday that the detention of party leader Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir will not overshadow the ongoing salary crisis facing employees.

Azad Karim said the government has failed to comply with agreements made with Baghdad, and stressed that despite Abdulwahid’s arrest, the movement will continue pressing to resolve the issue.

"Security forces raided his house late at night and arrested him after he warned that if the salary problem is not solved, employees will take a serious stance,” Karim said.

He added that the outgoing government has neither distributed salaries from domestic revenues and smuggled oil nor handed over sufficient revenues to Baghdad to secure salary transfers, with ongoing disputes over reducing the amount to less than 120 billion dinars.

Although the KRG announced on November 13 that it had reached a new deal to deliver oil to SOMO, a senior Iraqi official confirmed to NRT that the region has yet to comply and has not delivered a single barrel.
