Ayad Samawi, an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Sudani, has condemned the arrest and sentencing of Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir, leader of the New Generation Movement, calling for his immediate release by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
In a statement issued Wednesday, Samawi said Abdulwahid had been punished and tried without being informed of the trial date. He described the decision as unusual and expressed concern over the legal process.
"The strange thing is that the sentence was handed down without the defendant being notified of the trial date,” Samawi noted, adding that he hoped there was no political motive behind the case.
The comments come amid growing domestic and international criticism over Abdulwahid’s arrest, with several political parties and rights groups warning that such actions undermine democracy and political freedoms in the Kurdistan Region.
