The arrest of Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir, leader of the largest opposition party in the Kurdistan Region, comes days after he warned of serious action if public salary issues were not resolved. AFP reports the court could overturn the decision, grant bail, or keep him in detention.
AFP reported Wednesday night that security forces arrested Shaswar Abdulwahid Qadir, leader of the New Generation Movement, shortly after his public warning that the party would take a strong stance if the long-standing salary dispute was not resolved this week.
According to a security source, the court is expected to review the case today, with possible outcomes including overturning the arrest, releasing him on bail, or maintaining his detention.
AFP added that Abdulwahid has faced multiple assassination attempts in recent years and has been repeatedly targeted due to his sharp criticism of the Kurdistan Region’s two main ruling parties, as well as his campaign against unemployment and poverty.
