Iraq begins testing domestic gas pipelines to power plants as part of efforts to reduce dependency on Iranian gas. The project, led by Basra Oil Projects, aims to stabilize electricity production amid import cuts.

Basra Oil Projects is taking a major step to reduce the use of Iranian gas by channeling domestic gas to local power stations.

Muntasir Kazim, Director of Basra Oil Projects, said that due to a shortage of Iranian gas, testing will begin within the next three days on a pipeline running from the Khurz and Bayra ports to the Basra power plant. The team completed the project within 90 days and is now preparing to test the pipeline system.

Kazim noted that the new infrastructure is part of Iraq’s broader energy strategy to increase self-reliance and minimize disruptions caused by regional challenges.

A spokesman for the Oil and Gas Committee in the Iraqi parliament said the pipeline is expected to provide between 500 to 800 cubic meters of gas, which will significantly support Iraq’s electricity generation.

U.S. sanctions on Iran have led to reduced gas supplies, forcing Baghdad to scale back its imports and accelerate domestic energy projects.
