SULAIMANI — Security forces disrupted a demonstration in
solidarity with ongoing protests in Iran that was held in Sulaimani’s Salim
Street on Wednesday (September 28), seizing equipment and a camera from NRT
reporters.
The demonstration was in support of anti-government protests
in Iran that were triggered over the recent death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman
who died in police custody after she was arrested over the country’s mandatory
Islamic dress code.
Protestors carried photos of Mahsa Amini, also known as
Zhina, and chanted the popular slogans now associated with the protest
movement: "Woman, life, freedom.”
NRT reporter Zhura Ali said security forces prevented NRT
reporters from covering the demonstrations and tried to disperse protestors by
using tear gas.
The protest in Sulaimani also focused its opposition against
several bombardments launched by Iran that struck a number of areas in the Kurdistan
Region on Wednesday, killing at least five people and wounding dozens of
others.
Iranian human rights organisation, Hengaw, said Iran’s
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched rockets targeting the
headquarters of the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Koya and Komala
Party of Iranian Kurdistan (Komala) near Sulaimani as well as the Freedom Party
of Iran (PAK) near Erbil.
