SULAIMANI — A fire broke out in the Ashti displacement camp in Sulaimani governorate on Thursday (July 22), resulting in the death of a child.

Spokesperson for Sulaimani Civil Defense Rekan Jamal told NRT that an eight-year-old child had died in the blaze.

At least six tents were destroyed, camp manager Daban Mohammed told NRT.

Firefighters were able to control the fire, as of 5:00 p.m. local time.

Located outside of Arbat town, Ashti is one of the largest displacement camp in the governorate and the largest hosting internally displaced persons (IDPs).

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Joint Crisis Coordination Centre, Ashti is home to 8,795 IDPs as of June 14, including both Ezidis and Iraqi Arabs.
