SULAIMANI — Two Kurdish women died after a boat carrying 19 migrants capsized off coastal Bodrum in the southwestern province of Mugla, Turkish Coast Guard said on Monday (September 17).

Turkish Coast Guard Command said in a statement that they rescued 15 Iraqi nationals and a Syrian who were trying to cross to the Greek island of Kos, Anadolu Agency reported.

The teams also found the bodies of two women, the statement read. Search and rescue efforts were ongoing to find another missing migrant.

The refugees said there were 19 people, including eight children, on-board the boat.

According to Turkish authorities, the two women were residents of the Kurdistan Region’s province of Sulaimani.

Formal statistics show that over 250,000 people have traveled to Turkey in the last three years in attempts to migrate to Europe.

Over 200 people have died and nearly 50 people are missing.

Despite the increase in deaths in recent days, the number lost at sea so far this year is less than half that recorded by this time last year.
