SULAIMANI — Sulaimani Electricity Directorate said on Monday (January 25) that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has allocated more than 44 billion Iraqi dinars ($30 million) to build two electricity transmission networks in Sulaimani governorate.

On January 20, the Presidency of the Diwan of the KRG Council of Ministers approved funding from the government’s general electricity revenues for the new lines, the directorate said in a statement.

The first network will stretch 55 kilometers (34 miles) from Tanjaro to Said Sadiq and run 132 KVA of direct current. The new lines will provide increased capacity in Said Sadiq, Halabjay Shahid, and Penjwen districts.

A similar network will run 105 kilometers (65 miles) between Bazian and Ranya and benefit Pishdar and Bitwen in the Raparin administration.

Blackouts are common in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in the summer and winter when demand is highest. Successive governments have promised to solve the problem without success.
