SULAIMANI — Heads of Parwezkhan border crossing Ali Tofiq and Garmian Customs Directorate Hussein Ahmed have been arrested over fraud and smuggling charges, a source told NRT on Sunday (January 24).

The source in the Garmian’s administration office who spoke on the condition of anonymity told NRT that the officials appeared in court on Sunday and their statements were taken.

It said that they have been detained in accordance to Article 194 of the Iraq Customs Law.

NRT tried to contact Garmian Police Directorate, but it declined to comment.

On Tuesday, Qoratu/Khanaqin Court of First Instance issued warrants for the arrests of the supervisor of the Parwezkhan border crossing and the director of the Garmian Customs Directorate on charges of allowing illegal cargo into the Kurdistan Region from Iran.

The two officials have been wanted by the court on previous occasions, but Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Finance and Economy Minister Awat Sheikh Janab declined to continue the case.
