Writer Kakamam Botani dies at 83 of COVID-19

SULAIMANI — Prominent Kurdish author and head of the Kurdish Authors Union General Center Kakamam Fakhri Sami, known as Kakamam Botani, has died in Erbil at the age of 83.

Head of the Union’s Erbil branch Abulrahman Farhadi confirmed the news on his Facebook account on Sunday (October 25). The cause of death was COVID-19.

Born in January 1937 Koya district, Botani graduated from the University of Baghdad and started writing stories at the age of 20. He published his first story in 1975 and wrote extensively within the realist genre.

Botani was one of the founders of Authors Union and the Rwanga Movement and was an adviser to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Youth and Culture.

He will be buried in Koya on Sunday.
