SULAIMANI — Two civilians were killed in an airstrike by Turkish warplanes near Bara village in the Khansour sub-district of Sinjar district on Tuesday night (August 25).

“Turkish drones violated the Iraqi airspace and targeted a double-wheeled pick-up truck in Bara village at exactly 7:00 p.m.,” Iraq’s Security Media Cell said in a statement reported by Iraqi state-owned media.

Two passengers were killed, but the driver survived, according to the statement.

The cell said that Turkey conducted a second strike nearby, but that the number of casualties was not immediately known.

Turkey is in the midst of an intense air and ground campaign in the Kurdistan Region and northern Iraq, which is says is necessary to combat the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Since operations escalated on June 15, at least seven civilians have been killed in the Kurdistan Region, along with two Iraqi military commanders.

The strikes have enraged Baghdad, which has summoned Turkey’s ambassador on three separate occasions to submit notes of protest.
