SULAIMANI — Demonstrators gathered in Ranya for a third straight day on Friday evening (August 14), calling for government to step down and early elections.

NRT reporter Sabr Abdulla said that a young demonstrator was injured by a member of the Asayish who hit him with wooden baton. Two others were arrested after recording video of the demonstration on their mobile phones.

Abdulla said that members of a security forces unit affiliated with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has been stationed in front of the party’s offices in the city, which is northwest of Sulaimani, to protect the premises.

On Wednesday, demonstrators hit the streets in cities across the Kurdistan Region to protest deteriorating economic conditions and calling for the government to step aside in favor of a caretaker administration.

Protests continued on Thursday in Ranya and Qaladze, where protesters clashed briefly with the security forces.
