SULAIMANI —A Kolbar (porter) was killed by the Iranian security forces on Thursday (August 13) on the near Baneh city in Iran’s Kurdistan province.

According to Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, which closely monitors events in Iranian Kurdistan, the security forces opened fire on a group of Kolbars in the Hangazhal region, killing twenty-two-year-old Hadi Khidir. He was a resident of Kerimawa village.

It was the second shooting incident involving Kolbars in three days.

On August 10, a seventeen-year-old Kolbar named Armin Ahmadi was shot and severely wounded in the chest by Iranian border guards in the Marana region near Kurdistan province’s Mariwan city.

Kolbars carry goods across the mountainous border between Iran and Iraq on their backs and frequently come under fire from the Iranian security forces.

Despite extreme temperatures in winter and summer, they risk their lives in the treacherous mountain passes to make ends meet.
