SULAIMANI — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi decided to pay the salaries of public sector workers at the Kurdistan Region’s dams, and to transfer responsibility for paying those workers to the federal Ministry of Water Resources.

According to a letter from General Secretary of the Council of Ministers which was issued on August 4, Iraqi PM Kadhimi directed the federal Ministry of Finance to provide the salaries of April, June, and July of the employees in Kurdistan Region’s dams without delays.

On July 23, employees at the Darbandikhan Dam Directorate walked off the job in response to delays in the disbursement of their salaries, saying that they wanted the four months of back pay that they are owed.

On July 26, Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources Begard Talabani said that payment issue that precipitated a strike at an important hydroelectric dam has been resolved in coordination with federal and regional officials.

In June, the federal government offered to do so at the dams, noting that it already pays for the maintenance of those facilities.
