SULAIMANI — The Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Health said on Tuesday (August 4) that it has recorded 357 new cases of coronavirus infection in the Kurdistan Region.

Tuesday's new cases represented the third-highest single-day total since the health ministry recorded the first case in March. On July 7, it announced 495 new cases and 368 on July 30.

A total of 218 of the newest cases are in Erbil governorate, along with 83 in Duhok, 28 in the Garmian administration, sixteen in Sulaimani, and twelve in the Raparin administration.

This represents somewhat of a shift in where the outbreak is hitting hardest. Since March, Sulaimani usually has posted the most new cases per day and still has the highest total of any governorate.

Over the past two weeks, however, Erbil has taken the top spot.

Troublingly, cases in Duhok are also rising significantly. Up until this point, it had relatively fewer cases than Erbil and Sulaimani.

The ministry also said that twelve patients have died from the virus on Tuesday, while 138 patients recovered from the disease.

According to the health ministry, there have been 15,173 cases of coronavirus in the Kurdistan Region. An official tally of 9,551 patients has recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus infection, and 586 have died from it.
