SULAIMANI — Experiencing acute water shortages, residents in Erbil’s Daratu neighborhood protested on Thursday (July 9), demanding that the government fulfil its promise to drill a well to supply their homes with water.

“This neighborhood has been facing water shortages for many years and its residents are in a terrible condition,” one protester told NRT reporter Muhammed Amr.

“Our houses are not built illegally. The government officially gave permission to build the houses,” another protester said.

A number of Erbil’s neighborhoods lack basic services, which has prompted protests over the past several years, including in the Hasarok, Hiran City, Talar City, and Hewleri New neighborhoods and developments.

Recently, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) decided to drill twenty-three wells for neighborhoods that are currently facing water shortages, fifteen of which are in Erbil, including in Daratu.

According to a new report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), “Iraq faces a multifaceted water crisis that impacts water supply and quality throughout the country,” which could have “implications at the humanitarian, economic, security and social levels.”
