SULAIMANI — As part of the political agreement between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), an official from the latter party has taken up his role as deputy minister in the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Ministry of Interior.

PUK member Chato Salih began work at the ministry, which plays an important role in organizing and managing the Region’s powerful security forces, on Monday (July 6).

Earlier, representatives of third governing party the Change Movement (Gorran) took up deputy minister positions within the ministries of electricity and municipalities following a meeting with the KDP.

PUK representatives within the ministries of industry and trade, health, natural resources, religious endowment and justice, the mine board, tourism board will begin work over the next few days.

The current KRG cabinet relies an unbalanced powersharing arrangement between the three governing parties, with the KDP taking the lion’s share of cabinet positions on the basis of its plurality of seats in the Kurdistan Parliament.

However, when the government was formed, the KDP promised a number of positions within its ministries to its partners. Nearly a year has passed since the government was formed last July.
