SULAIMANI — Four people were reportedly killed and one other was wounded in a Turkish airstrike near Shiladze on Friday (June 19).

NRT Digital Media reporter Nihad Oramari said that the airstrikes targeted the Niroy and Rekani areas of Duhok governorate during the day and that many residents were evacuating their homes and farms because of the attacks.

Local sources described the victims as civilians.

The victims’ bodies underwent autopsies at Duhok General Hospital and have been readied for burial.

On Wednesday, a shepherd was killed in Erbil governorate’s Sidikan district by a Turkish airstrike.

Shortly before 3 p.m. the Turkish Defense Ministry tweeted out a video purporting to show an airstrike that killed three Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters. The video did not appear to show the same event.

On Monday, Turkish forces launched a series of airstrikes across northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, hitting targets in Qandil, Makhmour, Haji Omaran, and Mount Sinjar and has continued daily airstrikes since then. It also began a ground operation in Duhok governorate on Wednesday.

Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Turkish ambassador twice in three days this week to lodge formal protests.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has so far remained silent.

Twice this week, demonstrators protesting the Turkish operations have been out on the streets of Sulaimani.
