Two Kolbars killed by Iranian security forces in Urmia

SULAIMANI — Two Kolbars (porter) were shot and killed by the Iranian security forces near Urmia governorate, Hengaw organization said on Friday (May 29).

Hengaw, which reports on human rights in Iranian Kurdistan, said in a statement that the Iranian security forces opened fire on a group of Kolbars in Aland village on Thursday. The two Kolbars named Mohsen Darvishzadeh and Ibrahim Jordizj were both killed.

Hengaw added that the two kolbars were from Karkush village in Safai town near Khoy County in West Azerbaijan Province in Iran.

According to Hengaw, seventy-six Kolbars and workers died along the Iranian border in 2019, fifty of them were shot and killed from Iranian security forces. In addition to those who died, 144 others were wounded.

Kolbars carry goods across the mountainous border between Iran and Iraq on their backs. They frequently come under fire from Iranian border guards. Despite extreme temperatures in winter and summer, they risk their lives in the treacherous mountain passes to make ends meet.
