SULAIMANI — Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council on Wednesday (April 1) released 608 prisoners on bail as part of an effort to prevent an outbreak of coronavirus in the country’s overcrowded prison system.

According to Iraq health ministry, there 694 cases of coronavirus have tested positive for coronavirus infection in Iraq. 170 patients have recovered from COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus infection, and 50 patients have died from it.

The true totals are believed to be higher due to limited testing and the social shame associated with infection.

Other countries, including neighboring Iran and Turkey, have released thousands of prisoners to prevent the disease sweeping through incarcerated populations.
