SULAIMANI — A Chinese medical team is expected to arrive in the Kurdistan Region on Saturday (March 28) as part of the international fight against coronavirus.

A source from the Chinese Consulate General in Erbil told NRT Digital Media that the team is currently in Baghdad and will arrive in the Kurdistan Region’s capital in the evening.

The virus was first identified earlier this year in the central Chinese city of Wuhan and has now spread to over 170 countries, including Iraq. So far, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Ministry of Health has identified 122 cases of coronavirus in the Region and two patients have died.

After the reduction in the number of cases at home, China began sending aid to more than 83 countries.

Last week, it delivered 1,008 coronavirus test kits and 200,000 masks to the Kurdistan Region. It has also set up a medical center in Baghdad to assist federal authorities fight the outbreak in central and southern Iraq.

The US announced on March 25 that it is donating $670,000 to the World Health Organization (WHO) to fight the coronavirus outbreak in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
